Turmeric used needs to be organic, as phytochemicals such as curcumin are produced by the plant when it is under stress or attack. They are basically the plant's own defense system, which is why they are found in much less concentrations in non-organic plants as these are not stressed due to the use of pesticides and herbicides to help them along.
