Transdermal (through the skin) Magnesium Therapy is often recommended by professionals and regarded to have a plethora of benefits. You need to do your own research on this, but we can tell you that transdermally, magnesium gets into the cells directly where it is most needed, much more quickly and effectively than it does when magnesium supplements are taken by mouth, as only a maximum of 40% of magnesium taken orally gets into our cells.
Epsom Salts (magnesium sulphate) are commonly used for magnesium supplementation, but that form of magnesium has more of a drawing effect and is not in the best form for supplementation. It has been proved that Magnesium Chloride is the most effective form of magnesium for absorbing and replenishing your magnesium levels.
Magnesium can be administered in baths, foot baths and compresses, or use it to make your own magnesium oil. For a bath use 500g-1Kg and 250g – 500g in a foot bath, most beneficial before bed time, since deep relaxation resulting from an increase of magnesium in the body may promote sleep.
To make your own magnesium oil for topical application, dissolve magnesium hexahydrate chloride salts into water (preferably distilled). Keep adding more salt until it stops dissolving (ie you have reached an optimal solution). That is is! It can be put into a spray bottle for use (try our mister bottles in our aromatherapy section).
If the oil causes irritation, simply dilute the solution further until you can use it without irritation.
